Aaaaah, Suspended Isles ... How many kilometers did we used vertically ? Too much ! xD
I collaborate with le Lead Level Designer of Game Atelier, Pierre Boussira, on this level and we can say it was ambitious ! Not only the level evolves higher and higher, it's piercing the clouds towards the stratosphere ! You can imagine the challenge had our lighting artist, Adrien Louineau, and he succeed in creating two distinct mood with an outstanding reveal above the clouds !
The whole thing with this level is that a cataclysmic explosion blowed an alien plant in suspension in the a perpetual storm. With that pitch, I had to figure how to give that petrified explosion feeling : pieces of labs are stuck in the rocks, crystal are placed in a stormy way, and spikes follow the wind. The hardest work was on the clouds, from above as under. We had technical limits on transparency for the background so we used opaque shaders, and polished the dressing to get that cloudy feeling. The dressing above the clouds was a blast, as I could put some interior dressing, a piece of temple, and a final tower with a powerful scenic view for a memorable battle !
